 CHESTER HOUSE

Well what a weekend we had! Visitors from as far afield as Kent, East Mids, Chiltern and Anglia came to join us at our first meet of the year at this picturesque setting overlooking the River Nene. We had the unexpected use of the Threshing Barn ( or as some insisted-the Thrashing Barn ) on Friday evening where we could have a noggin and natter. Jane arranged a couple of games of Bingo, Mick the Bonus Ball and what Paul called an easy quiz on car makes and models.
On Saturday morning some set off on the various walks around the Estate and along the River Nene, with some reaching Wellingborough.
Others, in two groups had the privilege of having a guided tour of the Archaeological Resource Centre, one of only two in the country ( the other in London ) where artefacts are stored from all over Northamptonshire in this modern facility. Our guides were very informative and we were shown bones from a woolly rhinoceros, the horns from an aurochs, Nene pottery, Roman pottery and mosaics and flints over 4000 years old. We learned so much about our predecessors. Others made good use of the restaurant, with reports of the breakfast being superb.
Saturday evening came and again we met in the Threshing Barn where John, our professional caller, gave instructions on barn dances, such as the Gay Gordons ( can we say that these days ? ) and the Durham Reel. I think most of the entertainment was by laughing at ourselves as some couldn't even remember their lefts from their rights!
A bitter Sunday morning, so we had a quick coffee morning under shelter in the courtyard, before dispersing our separate ways.
We have been asked by the management of the Chester Estate to thank all of you who came to this meet, saying it was a pleasure to have the MCC with them. They have asked the committee to a meeting next month to "fine tune" our next meet, and they have ideas of their own that they would like to put forward to us - so thank you all! PAT
